Xeriscape Landscape
Carefree Living Without Compromising Beauty
Xeriscape Landscape is a perfect gardening concept for any garden style in San Diego. Xeriscape landscaping conserves water, is efficient and cost effective, and uses beautiful sustainable plants that are well adapted for the area. It is appropriate for the local soil and climate. It is not a bare earth ZERO-scape, nor is it cactus and gravel rock garden, either. It simply means landscaping adapted to a dry environment.

Water is now an expensive and limited resource, especially in Southern California. So all residential or commercial landscaping can benefit from xeriscaping. San Diego homeowners have the perfect opportunity to save money, save water, and have beautiful, interesting water-wise landscaping. It is not an alternative, it is a must. So consider it or just do it.
Xeriscape garden plants have lower water demands, are fire resistant, have fewer pest problems and need less fertilizer than other plants. You can use the plants you want, but applying on common-sense seven principles of xeriscape will help conserve water by grouping plants with similar water requirements together.

The seven principles of xeriscape include:
- planning and design,
- limited turf area,
- mulching,
- soil analysis,
- xeriphytic (low water use) plants,
- efficient irrigation, and
- proper maintenance.

An added benefit of Xeriscape landscapes is less maintenance. A well-designed landscape can decrease maintenance by as much as 60 percent or more through reduced mowing; once-a-year mulching; pruning and more efficient watering techniques. A well planned xeriscape landscape can also reduce electrical cost for air conditioning by planting trees to cool buildings in the hottest times of the year.

Benefits of xeriscaping:
- Reduced water bill and water conservation. Provides attractive year round landsapes.
- Costs the same as traditional landscape installation.
- Provides wildlife habitat.
- Reduces fossil fuel consumption and pollution.
- Presents minimal pest and disease problems.
- Thrives with little fertilization.
- Requires low pruning and maintenance.
- Saves valuable landfill space
