Modern Garden Design

Clean Lines and Sheer Beauty

The Modern garden style embodies clean, simple, geometric forms and architectural planting. This modern outdoor space is an ideal low maintenance small garden. Approaching from the street, the gate opens onto an exquisitely disciplined Zen-like design. This contemporary style modern garden includes the five Feng Shui elements – water, wood, metal, earth, and fire.

An artistic fence visually displaces the adjacent home. The materials are simple and clean. Stainless steel, anodized aluminum, and Ipe wood exude good taste and quality in a horizontal, elegant design. They focus the eyes on the paneled vertical succulent gardens, like living paintings along the wall, maximizing the narrow corridor between townhomes. The vertical garden is the perfect solution for the zero lot property and is ideally suited to courtyards and confined spaces.

The sustainably harvested Ipe wood is repeated as a built-in bench on the low wall at the back tying in the materials and completing the visual horizon while maximizing the courtyard space. The mechanical elements like air conditioner and BBQ grill are also made with Ipe wood and metal for consistency. Artificial turf minimizes maintenance and provides play space for the dog.

The hand carved Japanese water fountain and a delicate red maple tree are placed to be viewed from the window and to create a focal point where home owners can sit and enjoy the garden. Energy efficient low voltage LED landscape lighting adds ambience and serenity for night entertaining.

The limited low water use plant palette is a key to simplify the architectural planting. Plants used in this modern garden include: Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Silver Sheen’, Lomandra longifolia ‘Breeze’, Cordyline ‘Electric Pink’, Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’, Festuca filiformus ‘Tenuifolia’, Acer palmatum ‘Oshi Beni’, Aloe Hercules, Pedilanthus bracteatus, and Euphorbia antisyphilitica. Plants with similar water uses are grouped together and put on separate irrigation systems compatible with their needs.
