10 Benefits of Environmental Friendly Gardening and Landscaping

Eco-Friendly, Going-Green, Sustainable -
All Environmental-Friendly Gardening

Environmental friendly gardening/landscaping is more an idea than a method. It’s about learning to work with, rather than against, nature. It’s about growing plants adapted to the conditions nature sets, reducing use of chemicals and other environmental unfriendly practices. Friendly gardening means designing our gardens to complement the natural surroundings.

It’s sometimes referred to as natural gardening though it is more than that, contains a number of principles that revolve around balancing our needs and sense of beauty with those of nature because, in the long run, they are interrelated. They are based on such as protect existing natural areas, select appropriate plants for each particular site etc.

By adopting and advocating environmental friendly gardening, here's how we can all benefit.

  1. Helps to conserve the most precious and valuable resource – water: It often require very little watering. Most of the plants are able to make do with the water nature provides thus helping to conserve this scarce resource.

  2. Reduces water pollution: Mulch is the main source of organic matter and much of it comes from the plant themselves i.e. leaves and composted fall cleanup. It avoids from excess application and improper use and disposal of pesticides and fertilizers and from spills during refueling of power equipment thus reducing water pollution.

  3. Prevents air and noise pollution: It avoids operation of equipments like mowers, blowers, trimmers, etc. which accounts for over 5% of our urban air pollution. Residential areas are rarely peaceful due to the use of these equipments and the operators of these equipments are in danger of hearing impairment.

  4. Ensures health and safety: It prevents exposure to chemical pesticides and accidents from power tools and equipment. Many gardeners over apply or improperly apply pesticides, putting themselves, their families, and pets at increased health risk, also our clean air and drinking water are polluted from fertilizers, pesticides, and garden equipment emissions.

  5. Lower heating and cooling bills: Various studies have proved that environmental friendly gardening can save up to 30% on home heating bills and also 50% reduction in air conditioning costs. Deciduous trees planted appropriately along the south sides of buildings can reduce air conditioning costs by up to 20%.

  6. Reduces flooding: Environmental friendly gardening avoids extensive use of grass as a groundcover as it causes more water to run off, contributing to flooding problems in suburbs where woodlands have been cleared.

  7. Provides feeling of being closer to nature: In this fast moving and stressful life we don't have time to observe and admire beautiful nature but it provides greater opportunities to enjoy and be with nature.

  8. Reduced maintenance cost and labor: It saves large amount of labor and cost in contrast formal landscapes are heavily dependent upon mechanical equipment, labor, pesticides, fertilizers, etc.

  9. Reduced landscape maintenance costs: It avoids using mechanical landscape equipments which run on power or gasoline. Also it makes use of garden waste as a fertilizer which is available free of cost.

  10. Less strain on municipal waste collection and water treatment: Due to use of organic fertilizers in the form of yard waste nearly 1/5 of all municipal solid waste collected is organic matter that could be composted on site.

We cannot forever continue to abuse our surroundings and still expect a healthy, attractive community; we must learn to balance our needs with those of the environment. Environmental friendly gardening attempts to do just that. And, in addition to protecting and conserving our natural resources, it saves considerable time and money through reduced maintenance requirements.
